Animation performance by Ivana Bosnjak and Thomas Johnson

10 hours duration animation performance by animation artists Ivana Bosnjak and Thomas Johnson will allow the audience to explore the creative process of stop-motion puppet animation. In this new performance the artists will manipulate two small puppets of themselves to create portraits of each other working opposite. As a result, a metaphysical portraiture where “real” image of them is indefinite will be created. Recorded animations will be displayed during the work and visitors are invited to move around the animation set-up to see the transforming portraitures from each perspective. The creative process will enable the viewers to explore the duality of recorded moving image and live image in-between the animated frames.

Ivana Bošnjak

Ivana Bošnjak

Gained a master degree in graphic arts at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts. During these studies she had been experimenting with traditional graphic techniques, particularly engravings, which suited to her ink sketches, questioning the relationship between humankind and nature. Later on pursued a bachelor degree in animation from the University in Volda in Norway. During Erasmus program in The Estonian Academy of Arts she was trained in puppet animation. Since then Ivana has been professionally pursuing puppet animation film work and educating in this field. Worked on a number of stop-motion animation projects as a model maker, animator and film director. Filmography: “Crossed Sild” (2010, co-directed graduation film), “Simulacra” (2014), “Imbued Life” (2019).
Thomas Johnsonas

Thomas Johnsonas

In 2007 gained a bachelor degree in time-based media from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff and in 2016 – master degree at New Media and Animation Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. During his studies occupied with performance and painting disciplines, in 2010 Thomas focused on stop-motion animation, started to work in collaboration with Ivana and moved to Croatia. Asides from making animated films (short films as well as TV commercials) as the model maker, animator and visual designer, Thomas creates stop-motion performances which have been exhibited at a number of art galleries and animation film festivals. Filmography: “Simulacra” (2014, awarded as the Best Regional Film at Balkanima European Animated Film Festival 2014), “Imbued Life” (2019).
