Masterclass of film director Tom Lass

German director Tom Lass presents a fearless idea of directing a movie without a script. Improvisation is not a solution for everything, but rather an alternative approach especially useful to capture authenticity, to be flexible while shooting, making most of a limited budget or even more with a luxurious one. What improvisational methods are most useful for actors to create a memorable scene? How a director could help his actors to become the co-authors of the fiction? What even is a scene? A conflict? Do we always need it? How does the camera work, when it does not know exactly what is going to happen? Is there improvisation when shooting with a script? Improvisation affects all aspects of filmmaking, from locations to catering. Watching examples of Tom Lass' previous work and exploring the topic through the lens of psychology and philosophy we will delve deeply into the subject. The event is being held in English, free of charge and open to current and aspiring film professionals.

Tom Lass

Started acting at the age of 15 and currently counts more than 60 roles in German TV, feature and short films. His feature debut “Papa Gold” (2011) won the Association of German Film Critics Award at the Achtung Berlin film festival. His second feature “Kaptn Oskar” (2013) won the top award at the Oldenburg International Film Festival, its lead actress Martina Schöne-Radunski being awarded by Seymour Cassel Award. His 3rd feature “Blind and Ugly” (2017) won FIPRESCI International Critics Award at the International Filmfest Munich and the Ensemble Award in Oldenburg. Recently Lass directed a popular teenage webseries “Druck”. Currently writing his next feature and shooting an anthology serial drama, he lives and works in Berlin.
