Masterclass with animators Ivana Bosnjak and Thomas Johnson

What does it take to make a short puppet film? How to successfully develop a story, design characters, make puppets and sets? During this masterclass, animators Ivana Bosnjak and Thomas Johnson will screen their successful second directorial short film “Imbued Life” and reveal the process how they developed the story and visuals. The film, showcasing young taxidermist returning animals to nature, released this February, has been travelling around the world on more than 30 film festivals and has already received awards. The animators will also overview their other projects and talk about a successful professional career in animation. The event is being held in English, free of charge and open to current and aspiring film professionals.

Thomas Johnson

In 2007 gained a bachelor degree in time-based media from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff and in 2016 – master degree at New Media and Animation Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. During his studies occupied with performance and painting disciplines, in 2010 Thomas focused on stop-motion animation, started to work in collaboration with Ivana and moved to Croatia. Asides from making animated films (short films as well as TV commercials) as the model maker, animator and visual designer, Thomas creates stop-motion performances which have been exhibited at a number of art galleries and animation film festivals. Filmography: “Simulacra” (2014, awarded as the Best Regional Film at Balkanima European Animated Film Festival 2014), “Imbued Life” (2019).
Ivana Bošnjak

Ivana Bošnjak

Gained a master degree in graphic arts at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts. During these studies she had been experimenting with traditional graphic techniques, particularly engravings, which suited to her ink sketches, questioning the relationship between humankind and nature. Later on pursued a bachelor degree in animation from the University in Volda in Norway. During Erasmus program in The Estonian Academy of Arts she was trained in puppet animation. Since then Ivana has been professionally pursuing puppet animation film work and educating in this field. Worked on a number of stop-motion animation projects as a model maker, animator and film director.
