1951, Sweden. Seventeen-year-old Gertrude lives in a poor family with her father and younger siblings. When the children 's mother dies, the local government decides to take the children away from the father and place them in different care homes. Gertrude is already considered an adult and no longer suitable for a care home, she falls into a special home for young women, Odenslund. She soon realizes that the only way to freedom is through “voluntary” sterilization.
