The seventies. Insurance company detective Holt (Forest Whitaker) arrives in the gloomy and dying village of Hastings in Minnesota. His task is to find out if the famous artist Kelvin Anderson actually died in a car accident while traveling to his sister. Local police are convinced that the body found is Kelvin's body, but the detective has doubts about this fact. Identification is not possible because the body is too burned, and the coquettish sister of the deceased and her unpredictable husband behave rather strangely.
