,,Dogville" is a drama with strains of melodrama and filmed theatre, but ,,Dogville Confessions" is a documentary with strains of a soap opera and reality-TV. The film follows the two months of studying and shooting the film, alternating between shoots on the set, remarks from the director. We go from a shoot on the set, hear remarks from the director von Trier on the way home from the set, and blowouts from the leading actors in a ,,Survivor" - cage next to the studio. Once you see ,,Dogville", this additional footage is especially valuable. The shooting of the ,,Dogville" was unique in many ways. Von Trier himself operated the camera, and the actors had to constantly remember windows and doors that weren't there, because the film was shot in as studio with very few props. But the challenges were not only of the practical kind; they also came form a very moody director. Sami Saif's film makes this process visible in a very entertaining and revealing way.
