Lucie is a forensic expert preparing to retire. After the death of her partner, she lives a reclusive life. When a young family moves in next door, the neighbours develop a warm relationship, but it soon becomes apparent that her new friend Jan is a serial criminal and an activist who is extremely hostile to the police. Lucy is faced with a dilemma - to defend her profession or her friendship? Working again with actress Isabelle Huppert, veteran French filmmaker André Techiné creates a drama of conflicting political values and allows the fragile side of the police profession to emerge.
