In the countryside, two girls from the apostolic Lutheran families are coming close to the marrying age. One of the girls escapes to work in the city for the summer. The parish sends girl’s friend to look after her. The escaped girl, Mary, tries on makeup and tastes cider. She goes out dancing and kisses a stranger. Dome Karukoski was born 1976, Cyprus, moved to Finland, when he was four years old. His mother is a Finish journalist and his father an American actor George Dickerson. He was selected to the University of Art and Design of Helsinki in 1999. „Beauty and the Bastard“ (2005) was Karukoski’s graduation film. “The Home of Dark Butterflies” is his second feature. Karukoski has several national championships as a coach and a player in American football. Because of that, has an odd trademark of arriving to premiere’s and galas: „straight from practice“. He has said in interviews that he never misses practice.
