Scanorama Begins: Must-See Movies on the First Weekend

The annual European Film Forum Scanorama, celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, begins on Thursday. On its first weekend, the cinematic fiesta starting off in Vilnius will offer a variety of great films, guest encounters and other events. According to the founder and art director of the festival Gražina Arlickaitė, not only will Scanorama present the strongest cinema works of the year, but also introduce less familiar names and films.

“We wanted to congratulate both ourselves and our audience by introducing an unprecedentedly vigorous programme, by sharing the most interesting cross-sections of European cinema. Looking over the European cinema field, Scanorama highlights a clear trend: contemporary cinema tries to revive the neorealism attitudes towards an ordinary man and his simple fate, turning away from the era towards a trembling soul of a man.

On the first weekend of Scanorama, the viewers will be able to see the most significant movies of the year: the winner of this year’s Palme d’Or, The Square by Ruben Östlund and the Berlinale Golden Bear winner On Body and Soul by Ildikó Enyedi. Probably one of the most awaited movies from the festival’s News from the North section, Joachim Trier’s Thelma will also be on screens this weekend, as well as the second work of director Peter Schønau Fog You Disappear.

The Warm-Up and the Party

This year‘s festival will be opened by Sally Potter‘s The Party, a film sparkling with British wit.
