15th Scanorama Solemnly Began in the Capital
Thursday evening, the opening ceremony of European Film Forum Scanorama got underway. This year, the biggest fall film festival started off with extraordinarily lavish programme, which, on the festive evening, was opened by intellectual British humor tape The Party.
“This year SCANORAMA celebrates its 15th birthday! Therefore, I am extremely happy about the vigorous programme and its films which we will bank relentlessly on the shoulders of festival’s fans. They are welcomed by intensive, vivid, interesting fall of films,” - the founder and art director of Scanorama Gražina Arlickaitė spoke congratulating the assembled guests.
Scanorama will offer the viewers a large packet of fine films selected from a wide European film field. Therein lies many important works that gained the major awards in the grand European film festivals. The winner of this year’s Palme d’Or, The Square by Ruben Östlund, the Berlinale Golden Bear winner On Body and Soul by Ildikó Enyedi, Loveless by Andrey Zvyagintsev, the winner of the Cannes Jury Prize, works of the Cannes Competition contestants, Happy End by Michael Haneke and the newest tape of Sergei Loznitsa Austerlitz. Aside from famous and very well-known names, Scanorama essentially offers the viewers a rich universe of film discoveries – the first and the second works of directors; unusually lavish is the part of programme dedicated to Lithuanian premieres.
This year’s Scanorama is sponsored by Her Excellency the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, whose greeting on the other side of the screen pleasantly surprised the assembled guests. A crowd of people prominent in Lithuanian cinema, art and culture participated in the opening ceremony of the festival. The Minister of Culture Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson and the Auditor General Arūnas Dulkys came to the opening of the festival. Lithuanian film director Giedrė Žickytė with Eitvydas Bajarūnas, Algirdas Kaušpėdas, Beata Tiškevič with Saulius Baradinskas, Aleksandras Pogrebnojus were all smiling amongst the guests. The directors of this year’s Lithuanian premieres, Vilma and Jūratė Samulionytės, Olga Černovaitė visited as well. There also was a foreign delegation: Julian Radlmaier, Mitja Licen, Jean Breschand, Denisa Buranova, Iveta Grofova, Ana Felicia Scutelnicu.
The European Film Forum Scanorama will take place in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and Šiauliai, November 9-26.
